How to Make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Gla How to Make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow published by Delacorte Press in 2019 Review by: Kristen Higgason (she/her) MLIS Student, Kent State University iSchool M.Ed Student, Kent State University EHHS Themes: Loss, grief, and depression Tiger’s Mom dies and she is forced to find her way through the darkness that seems to be never-ending. Tiger grieves her Mom throughout the book and it’s just as messy, depressing, and painful as one would guess. This is a book about losing someone and navigating the loneliness of grief when someone you love dies. While it may not seem like the most fun book to read, it kept me on my toes. It felt like every chapter, Tiger and I were catching another curveball. Tiger seems like an unrelatable character if you have never grieved someone before, but if you give her the chance, you will cheer her on as she fights through her darkness. Tiger’s grief is a main part of the experience of this book, but it is far from the only one. Written wonderfully and honestly, it makes sense that this book was one of the winners for Young Adult Best Fiction books for 2020. This book deals with a tough subject but being with Tiger is so worth it.
