Today we remember the birthday of beloved American cartoonist and creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip, Charles Schulz. Schulz was awarded the highest honors from fellow cartoonists, an Emmy Award for his animated specials, recognized and lauded by the U.S. and foreign governments, and honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—adjacent to Walt Disney’s. For nearly 50 years, fans eagerly waited to read the latest antics of the Peanuts Gang in the Sunday paper and the comic continues to entertain audiences of all ages to this day.

Stevenson is most recognized for his works including “Treasure Island,” and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Considered by many as the father of the modern-day pirate tale, Stevenson is responsible for associating peg legs, parrots, and treasure maps marked with an “x” with pirates.

Tammy and Sharon are paired as pen pals for a school assignment. As they grow closer, they divulge secrets they don’t dare tell anyone about who they truly are. A historical fiction look at being LGBT in The 1970s.
Written through letters between Tammy and Sharon, Sharon and her diary, and Tammy and Harvey Milk, this book has a little something for everyone. The use of the letters keeps you on your toes and it feels a little risqué with how personal and vulnerable the letters are. You’ll also find all kinds of love (mostly forbidden love because it’s the 1970s and LGBT love is considered wrong). However, the perseverance of the main characters is undeniable. You will root for Tammy and Sharon to come out, be authentic, and live a life that they deserve. This book is a really great look into the past and how LGBT folks were treated (and sometimes still are). This was a great read and I learned so many things while also feeling like I was part of history.

To celebrate Picture Book Month, we will be posting one of our favorite picture books each Monday of the month.

Choosing a favorite picture book is like choosing a favorite food; the choice comes down to the memories you attach to it. For me, that means I'd have to pick Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney. I have seen so many little ones (ages 2-4) fall in love with this book. The fun, play, and smiles that I've seen this book draw out of kids is absolutely priceless.

The main character is Little E, the smallest construction vehicle at the worksite. All he wants to do is help. He tries his best to replicate what the bigger trucks are doing exactly, but things keep going wrong. He stumbles, makes a mess, and just gets in the way. But just before the transformation of this junkyard into a beautiful park is complete, we discover that there is a job that only Little E can do. Little E happily does his part and gets his moment to shine.

Dewdney's rhymes, beat, and use of onomatopoeia (beep! beep! beep!) is irresistible to young children and makes it a fun choice for story times at the library or at home. It's one of those books kids love to memorize. So many words repeat themselves between construction books (beep, dig, honk), which makes them contenders for some of the first words for truck-lovers to learn to read.

Even now, I'm reciting the lines in my head as I write even though it's been at least a year since I've read the book. Little Excavator is truly memorable #picturebook #picturebooksforkids #PictureBookMonth #picturebookmonth #RCLCkentstate

Happy birthday today to award-winning author Margarita Engle. Engle is the recipient of the first Newbery Honor awarded to a Latino author, a Pura Belpré Medal, the Américas Award, and many others. In 2017-2019, she served as the Young People’s Poet Laureate, and in 2019 Engle was awarded the international NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature. A few of her well-known works include “Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir,” “Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln,” and “Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Changed Music." Her writing often shows her deep appreciation and knowledge of nature, and focuses on the celebration of forgotten Cuban characters.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Japanese-Americ

Today we celebrate the birthday of Japanese-American writer and illustrator Allen Say. At the age of six Say knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist and when he was twelve he apprenticed himself to his favorite cartoonist Noro Shinpei. Say is the recipient of both the Caldecott Honor for “The Boy of the Three-Year Nap” and the Caldecott Medal for “Grandfather’s Journey.” Many of his works have autobiographical elements that echo his and his family’s unique experiences.

Today we wish a happy birthday to author and educator Sharon M. Draper. Draper is the five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Awards and a New York Times Bestselling author. In 2015, Draper was the recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime literary achievement, and was one of four authors chosen to speak at the National Book Festival Gala in Washington, D.C. Beyond being an accomplished author, Draper is also an educator and has been honored as the National Teacher of the Year and named as the Ohio Pioneer in Education by the Ohio State Department of Education. Draper has also been honored at the White House six times and her book “Copper Sun” was selected by the US State Department and the International Reading Association as the United States novel for the international reading project called Reading Across Continents.

Today we remember the birthday of prolific young adult author Walter Dean Myers. Over the course of his 45-year career, Myers won more awards than any other author for young adults, and wrote more than 110 books. His works span lyrical picture books, gritty novels, poetry, short stories, history, biography, and memoirs, leaving virtually no genre untouched. Myers was the recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement, won the Coretta Scott King Award five times, and received two Newbery Honors. In 2009 he was given the honor of delivering the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture, a distinction reserved for an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of children’s literature. He was also the first recipient of the Michael L. Printz Award in 2000 and was a nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010. Myers was appointed by the Library of Congress as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and served in that role for 2012 and 2013. Myers' contributions to young adult and children’s literature has shaped many lives and will continue to do so for many more years to come.

Happy birthday today to internationally recognized illustrator and artist Rafael López. Among his many works, López has illustrated “Dancing Hands, How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln,” “Make Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood,” and “The Day You Begin.” His murals can be found in urban areas, children hospitals, public schools, and around the country. In 2008 and 2012, López was asked to create official posters for the Obama campaign and in 2012 he was also selected by the Library of Congress to illustrate the National Book Festival poster. He is the recipient of the 2017 Tomás Rivera Children’s Book Award, three Pura Belpré honors, and two Américas Book Awards.

Today we remember the birthday of English author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. Potter is well known for her animal-themed children’s books that include “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin,” and “The Tale of Tom Kitten.” When publishers originally declined “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” Potter published the story herself and the book's popularity led to its official publishing by Frederick Warne & Co. a year after Potter’s copies. In 1903, Potter designed and created the first Peter Rabbit doll herself and immediately registered it, making Peter Rabbit the world’s oldest licensed literary character. Now, more than two million Beatrix Potter books are sold across the world every year, and the stories are passed down from generation to generation.

This joyful celebration of a biracial family brings a smile to the face of all who read it and reminds readers that beyond being an author, Arnold Adoff was also a father. His words echo into the hearts of the modern day reader and emphasizes that love knows no color or race. With each word, the family is celebrated from their moments of laughter to their times of exasperation. “I'm still attempting to influence kids in one way or another, whether it is the way they view the color of skin or reality and fantasy. Today we remember the birthday of author E.B. White. He is well-known for his numerous children's books including “Charlotte’s Web,” “Stuart Little,” and “The Trumpet of the Swan.” His books have been beloved by many readers, young and old, and teach empathy and compassion. Over the course of his career, White received the Newbery Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Children’s Literature Legacy Award, and was a runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in both 1970 and 1976.
