A Closer Look at Eventown

As a kid, I loved to read books set in alternate and dystopian worlds, like The Giver by Lois Lowry and The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Eventown by Corey Ann Haydu also takes place in an alternate world: a town where everything is perfect and equal. All of the houses look exactly the same, every berry is ripe, and all the residents are friendly. Like The Giver, this book brings up the question of what the world would be like with no painful memories, and no suffering. But is ‘perfection’ and ‘sameness’ really worth it? What about the beauty in imperfection, creativity, and diversity? I’m sure many more interesting questions will come up while reading. As a fan of thought-provoking fiction, I’m going to add it to my reading list right away.
